Born and raised in Canada. I have always been drawn to stories – especially those of survival, and the unbreakable human (and animal) spirit. My early years were spent in the high-intensity world of firefighting and emergency medical services. I saw humanity at its most fragile, and its most resilient. Those experiences have shaped me, not only as a first responder, but as a storyteller.

Writing is a way of processing the world, translating moments of crisis into something meaningful. My first books, Don’t Jump and Camp 100, explored rescue and war. Don’t jump is a guide to Ropeway Evacuation, while Camp 100 delved into a little-known simulation of World War II history.

Now, my writing has taken me on a different path – one inspired by nature’s own storytellers. The Elephants and the Emperor is my latest work, a children’s story based on a remarkable real-world event; a herd of elephants journeying across China. This tale blends adventure with an environmental message that creates a new context, encouraging young readers to appreciate the intelligence and resilience of these incredible creatures.

Whether writing about human survival or animal adventures, my goal remains the same; to tell good stories that matter. From my days in emergency response to my life as an author, I believe in finding the extraordinary in the everyday. Because sometimes, the most powerful stories are not just imagined – they are lived.

About Elephants and The Emperor:

An Epic Adventure Inspired by a True Story.

In 2020, a herd of elephants set off on an incredible journey from their home in the lush forests of Yunnan, China. Over the next year, they wandered more than 500 kilometers, surprising the world as they roamed through towns, farms, and cities. They were spotted trotting down urban streets, exploring a car dealership, and even visiting a retirement home, where they curiously peeked their trunks into the rooms.

Their astonishing real-life adventure captured hearts around the globe and raised important questions about habitat loss and human encroachment on wildlife. Now, in a beautifully illustrated children’s book, The Elephants and the Emperor, author Rodney Gair reimagines their journey as a magical quest to seek wisdom from the Emperor of China himself.

In this enchanting story, young readers will follow Jiahao, a small Asian Elephant Calf and his family, as they journey across China. Along the way, they pass some of the country’s most famous landmarks before they finally arrive at the Forbidden City, the grand palace of the Emperor.

This heartwarming tale blends adventure and environmental awareness, making it a perfect read for curious young minds.
